The standardized tests go through refinements from time to time. This is done to make the tests more inclusive and relevant and cater to the needs of the graduate schools. GRE words are updated regularly and new words are added. These are extensively used in reading comprehension and verbal testing. GRE was first created in 1949. GRE conducted only verbal and Quantitative reasoning in the early versions. Analytical writing assessment was included in 2002. A major revamping was done in 2011 and new scoring structure and new kinds of questions were created.

Quantitative reasoning section Old GRE exam – Quantitative comparison, problem-solving, and data interpretation. One section with 28 questions with a duration of 45 minutes. GRE General Test – Multiple choice questions with an option for selecting one answer or more than one answer, Quantitative comparison questions and numeric entry questions. Two sections with approximately 20 questions per section. The duration is approximately 35 minutes per section. Analytical writing section
